The Minister of Transportation revealed that the government is planning to invest 20% of the state’s FY21/22 budget, which equals EGP490bn, on transportation infrastructure projects. Some of the projects that are being fast-tracked are the high-speed electric train connecting Ain Sokhna to Alamein, the monorail connecting the New Administrative Capital to the rest of Cairo, and the revamping and expansion of Ain Sokhna Port. Another key project in progress is the revamping of Alexandria’s Abu Qir tram line by converting it into a subway and then subsequently extending the distance covered by the line significantly over two phases.
