The SCA (Suez Canal Authority) has signed an agreement with the global shipping giant Maersk to build a new USD500mn berth at the Suez Canal Container Terminal in East Port Said. The signing of the deal was witnessed by the head of the SCA during his foreign visit to the Netherlands and Denmark. The new berth will be 1km long, with the deal including increasing the number of cranes to 30. These will be powered by electricity as opposed to diesel, contributing towards the terminal’s target of becoming net-zero by 2030. Part of the deal’s goals is to transform the Suez Canal Container Terminal into a smart terminal. The greater goal is to establish the terminal as a global hub in the Eastern & Southern Mediterranean region for container handling.
